Those hairy toes are proper wrong!!
Mid life crisis - maybe? I hit the big 40 back in October and decided that I needed to prove that I'm not really getting old. So I've decided to go for a run out with my two mates; Gaz & Frank, in the hope of proving my youthfulness, having a laugh (hmm) & raising same money for my chosen charity Dr. Kershaw's Hospice, Oldham. The Lakeland 50 is a race across the Lake District. It's 50 miles with approximately 3200 metres of hill climbing - lets give it a go! Mick Sheehan

Dovestones again - 25/02/2012
As it's one of my favourite runs and I've got to keep the mileage low for the short term, i repeated the run below this weekend. I didn't take any new pics and apologies for not reporting anything more exciting!
On a positive note, the knee felt much better and the hamstring tightness seems to be fading. Fingers crossed.
I've been getting out for plenty of short runs to keep the fitness levels up but am going to try and stretch out again to about 10 miles this weekend and see how it goes.
Cheers

The beautiful (and busy) Dovestones 19/02/2012
Managed to get out for just short of 8 miles last Sunday. The weather was good and as a result Dovestones was very busy. Thankfully the cars are restricted to one small area, which is just as well judging by the chaos they were causing (it comes to something when you're having to overtake cars on foot!).
I kept the distance down to try and ease the pressure on my right knee and had only done one other small run the previous Wednesday. Things seemed better and there were no niggles till around 6 miles. The one pain (literally) was my left hamstring, which for some reason has been tight for over a week, brought on by a change in running style caused by the right knee problem...who knows?
As you can see by the photo there are certainly worse places to be!
I've been out again, only once this week (22/02/2012) for a quick 4 miles and the knee was fine but the hamstring was still pulling. I'm out again over the weekend and it feels ok, touchwood, so i'm looking forward to a good run out.
The physio (Dave Carter) who i've seen again today, seems to be working has magic. He's got me doing all sorts of weird and wonderful stretches and strengthening exercises, as well as doing accupuncture and trigger point work (i think that's what it's called?). These all seem to be working well. He's even provided me with a large, polystyrene roller for rolling about on, self massage style (think solid, sausage dog style, draft excluder and you get the idea). Not the kind of exercises you'd be doing with an audience, but very effective i'm sure!
Will try to update a bit quicker after this weekends run.
Cheers

Knee pain cuts run short 11/02/2012
I got out on Saturday and did just shy of 7 miles. Unfortunately this was quite a bit shorter than planned! I've been suffering with a bit of pain on the outside of my right knee which generally comes on after the first 3 or 4 miles and gets to the limping and face pulling stage by about mile 7. Not great as that'd leave me with a mere 43 miles of hobbling to go! Here's the route:
I've done a bit of reading up on what it could be but rather than second guess i figured this needs nipping in the bud now. So I'm off to the Physio on Thursday evening. I'm hoping Dave Carter from Mossley http://www.davecarterphysio.co.uk/ can sort things out, fingers crossed.
Will update when i know more.

Snow stops play!
Unfortunately I've not been out over the weekend because of the snow. Don't get me wrong, I'm not scared of a bit of the white stuff (as you can see from my previous post) but unfortunately i had to work Saturday evening and Sunday morning. One of the perks of running a mobile care service means that when it snows, I get the job of playing Snow Taxi in my 4x4! Never mind, sometimes priorities take over and it was much more important that our elderly Client's received their service than it was for me to risk breaking my neck on some ice :o)

A bit colder (& whiter) than expected!
I set off a little later than usual hoping that the frost would have lifted somewhat. This worked till i got to a certain altitude!
The run from Uppermill to Dovestones was a little slow because i kept stopping and trying to get my 'chest pouch' (part of my Inov8 backpack which has been kindly supplied by Matt at Inov8 - thank you!) to stop jumping around. The problem being that the bottom of it attaches to the waist strap of the backpack but i never have this very tight because it effects my breathing, so it just kept bouncing about. Anyway i solved the problem by fastening the drawcord from the waistband of my tights to it but there was a moment were i had it too tight and my voice went up a pitch or 2!
From Dovestones i ran/walked up to Chew Res and about half way up (just after passing the mountain rescue - always reassuring!) the track turned from grey to white. And from halfway, the white went from a dusting to about 2 inches.
Just before reaching the top i caught up with Claire Maw, who was out walking and taking photo's. So working on the basis that if you don't ask you don't get, i enquired if she would be so kind as to take a couple of snaps for the blog. Claire kindly obliged and I'm sure you'll agree the results are very good (obviously this hinges on what you think of the subject in the middle of the snaps :o)
On chatting to Claire briefly she explained that she is also in training, for the Cartmel Sticky Toffee Trail 10k on 17th March. No easy task considering that she couldn't run for more than 2 minutes without stopping before Christmas. I'd just like to wish you all the very best with the run Claire and thanks again for the snaps. Below is a link to Claire's Flickr page:

My intention, once up at Chew Res, was to run over the moor to Laddow rocks and then over Black Hill which would have brought me out onto the Holmfirth road. from there i could have taken a short(er) or longer route depending on how i was feeling. However, this is a route I've never completed before and once i got to the far edge of the Res i had a re-think on health and safety grounds! It was proper cold up there and i came over all sensible. The path around the side of the Res must usually be very wet and muddy but this had frozen over in places. My feet had broken through the ice twice and would have been proper wet if it weren't for my Sealskin (waterproof) socks. Maybe I'll wait for my pal Tom to take me over the route when everything's not so white!
So i turned around and headed back down to Dovestones, ran around one side of it and up around Yeoman Hey Res then up onto the A635. From there i cut across to the bottom of Pots and Pans hill and then back to Uppermill over Gellfield lane.
The route was approximately 13.5 miles. I had downloaded a new running app for my phone called Cardio Trainer which uses GPS to log your route. It seemed to do quite well apart from the fact that it didn't start logging the run till i got to Dovestones. Possibly user error but the App seemed to do quite a good job and is a damn sight cheaper (free) than a GPS watch. I may put my hand in my pocket for the paid version (£6) if i can get it working properly.

About 3/4 the way up to Chew Res looking back at Pots and Pans in the distance

Blog update
Just thought I'd take the time to explain that I'm only going to write up interesting runs, which will usually mean weekend runs. The reason i say this, is that it was originally my intention to write up every run. However it's going to get a bit dull if i write up every dark, cold & wet evening road run of less than 10 miles over the next 6 months! That said me and Frank did get out for approximately 8 miles on Thursday night :o) If anything worth writing about occurs then i will update you all but don't hold your breath.
Cheers
